Reintroducing the German Noble Crayfish

In recent years, the native German noble crayfish has faced significant challenges due to the invasive presence of the American crayfish species in German waters. Recognizing the importance of preserving and restoring native biodiversity, our company has embarked on a collaborative project with the Alfred Wegener Institute to reintroduce the German noble crayfish to its natural habitats. The Project:
Breeding and Reintroduction Efforts

Our project entails comprehensive breeding and reintroduction efforts aimed at reviving the German noble crayfish populations. Working in collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute, we have established state-of-the-art facilities to facilitate the breeding and rearing of juvenile crayfish specimens.

The breeding process involves careful selection of breeding pairs to ensure genetic diversity and resilience within the population. About the German Noble Crayfish

The German noble crayfish (Astacus astacus), also known as the European crayfish or the Edelkrebs in German, is a species of freshwater crayfish native to Europe. Characterized by its distinctive blue-black coloration and robust claws, the German noble crayfish plays a vital role in freshwater ecosystems as both a predator and a scavenger.

These crayfish species typically inhabit clear, well-oxygenated freshwater bodies such as rivers, streams, and lakes. They are an integral part of the food web, consuming aquatic plants, invertebrates, and carrion while also serving as prey for larger predators such as fish and birds.

Historically, the German noble crayfish was abundant throughout its native range, contributing to the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. However, the introduction of invasive species, habitat degradation, and overexploitation have led to population declines and range contractions in recent decades.
